Happy Holidays

Been a while since I've posted, thought I'd at least get one more post in before Christmas. Since 2009 seems to be the year of Android I created this image to celebrate the season.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!

IF Pattern

I stumbled across a contest on the web to create your own Mountain Dew can. Being a Mt. Dew drinker I gave it a shot and came up with my own Mt. Dew logo. I'm reusing that logo to create a pattern for this week's Illustration Friday topic on "Pattern". (click on image for larger view)

IF Infinite

This week's Illustration Friday topic is "Infinite" and I really struggled at first to come up with an idea. However, when I was working on another drawing that required an image of a drop it sparked an idea in my head. This image is meant to illustrate that there is infinite love and infinite pain in the universe. (oooh, very deep and mystical)

I didn't want to just have a plain white background so at first I toyed with the idea of a starry background to represent the universe. Then I realized the thorns would just get lost on that background. I switched to a flesh tone background as I thought this image might look cool as a tattoo.

IF Magnify & Strong

I never got a chance to submit for last week's Illustration Friday topic "Magnify". I thought I'd combine it with this week's topic "Strong" and show the super strong ant up close.

IF Caution

When I heard that "Caution" was this week's Illustration Friday topic I immediately thought of caution road signs. I brainstormed several different ideas but finally settled on the image above. It means "Caution - Nerd Ahead". (taped glasses being the international symbol for nerds.)

IF Wrapped

This weeks Illustration Friday topic is "Wrapped". Two things immediately came to mind when I heard the topic:
1) Birthday/Xmas presents
2) The old game where you wrap somebody like a mummy using toilet paper

I think you can tell which way I decided to go. Though I guess I could have had the mummy carrying a 5000 year old birthday gift too.

IF Modify

This week's Illustration Friday topic is Modify. I immediately thought of genetically modified food, or as Europeans call it 'Frankenfood'. With enough growth hormones and steroids our cows might start looking like the drawing above. I think if I saw a cow like that coming for me I'd modify my diet to vegetarian.

He's Just a Bill

In honor of my friend's birthday I present another Schoolhouse Rock drawing. Much like the cartoon character my friend is also "just a Bill".

There are other August birthday's I need to acknowledge, but I don't know how to draw: "She's just a Beverly!", "She's just an Amy!", or "She's just a Bonnie!"

Gerald McBoing Boing

In general I am not a fan of UPA cartoons. They were revolutionary for their time but ultimately started the drive toward limited animation and away from the full animation of Disney, Warner Bros. and MGM shorts. However, I did enjoy the short of Gerald McBoing Boing about a boy who makes sounds effects instead of talking.

2 Years of Stuff

2 years of posting my drawings on the internet.....I must be cracked!

For those who don't recognize this character, it's the mascot for Cracked Magazine. Cracked was a competitor of Mad Magazine. Where Mad Magazine had Alfred E. Neuman, Cracked had this guy. Most people know him as 'the Cracked janitor' but thanks to Wikipedia I now know that his name is Sylvester P. Smythe.

My posting tends to be sporadic and infrequent but I'm still going after two years. Only 350 days to my 3 year anniversary!

Super Friends

My daughter Abby has been bit by the comic book bug. (thanks in part to seeing my comic collection in the basement) One of the comics she's been buying is Super Friends based on the Mattel superhero toys. I thought I'd try my hand at super hero drawing and here's what I came up with based on an image from one of the comics. (note - no Wonder Twins....thank God)

This was a black marker on white paper image that I used photo shop to color. As an experiment I will also post the same image colored with markers.

Update: The second image is colored with markers.

IF Subtract

This week's Illustration Friday topic is subtract. It got me thinking back to learning basic math facts in elementary school. Being a child of the 70s my parents bought me the "Little Professor" calculator to help me practice my math. An electronic version of flash cards.

I actually found this in the basement a year or so ago (the benefits/curse of being in a family of pack rats) and it still worked. I gave it to my oldest daughter to use but I believe she just thinks it's an antique. (and she's not necessarily wrong)

IF Celebrate

Halflings (i.e. Hobbits) love food. Whenever they get together in large groups they celebrate with a food fight.

I was actually working on the image above as a logo for a Bloodbowl team I created called "Fling 'n' Food". But the story above also makes the image work for this week's Illustration Friday topic: celebrate.

IF Time

I got sick last week and, ironically, didn't have time to post an image for the Illustration Friday topic: Time. Off to go work on this week's topic: Celebrate

IF Pale

The Illustration Friday topic this week is pale. What could make a person more pale than the economic headlines these days?
