Slow Restart

Going to slowly bring this blog back to life.  No predictions about how often I'll post. No "365 drawings in a year" challenges to myself.  Back to drawing for the fun of it, not because of some self imposed deadline making it feel like a chore.  When I get the urge, and have the time, I'll draw and post.

Above are three drawings my kids requested: BMO from Adventure Time, Wreck It Ralph from the movie of the same name, and Yoshi from the Mario Brothers video games.

Disney #23 - Goofy and Max

In honor of Father's Day here is a drawing of Goofy and his son Max from the feature A Goofy Movie (1995). And let's be honest who hasn't thought their father was a little goofy at some point in their life.

Disney #22 - Dumbo

I continue to work my way chronologically through the storyboard drawings in Walt Disney Animation Studios: The Archive Series: Story I'm now up to the early 1940s shorts and features. Today's drawing is from the animated feature Dumbo (1941) when Dumbo unfurls his giant ears for the first time.

Disney #8 - Surprised Mickey

I've included the pencil draft, inked, and final photoshopped images so you can see how the "Surprised Mickey" drawing progressed.

I'm not sure what this image originally came is from, other than it was in the corner of my animated Disney desk calendar for the week of February 6-12. Regardless, I think it's a pretty funny Mickey picture.

Disney #3 - Mickey Mouse (Fishin' Around)

Most of the images from the Disney Archive Series: Story book are pencil sketches from storyboards for various Disney cartoons. Here is my rendition of a storyboard drawing from the 1931 cartoon "Fishin' Around". I find it funny that I have a hard time with Mickey's head and ears when it's essentially just 3 circles.

Disney #1 - Donald Duck

This is my pencil draft of Donald Duck celebrating New Year's with his nephews. I apologize for the crummy scan. My scanner does better with inked drawings rather than pencil drawings. This drawing was a copy of this comic cover from 1943.

Friday Night Lights: High School Mascots II

Continuing the high school mascot posts, here is the Grant High School Bulldog. This is where my oldest daughter will attend high school in a few years.

On a geeky side note: This mascot image is actually based on a drawing by famous animator Preston Blair. He is best known for animating "Red Hot Riding Hood" for MGM.

Meet Lil' Skel

I came up with this little character this weekend and I decided to name him Lil' Skel. He's easy to draw and I think he's got a lot of possibilities. I have an idea in mind but it may take me a few days to get it ready. Stay tuned....

Basketball Phrase

When I play basketball I subscribe to the Pat Riley philosophy of 'no easy layups'. In other words, I'll foul a player rather than give up an easy basket. Anyone who has played basketball with me has most likely had the following conversation with me:
Me - "Did he score?"
Other player - "No."
Me - "Good D!"

I thought that conversation might make a good T-shirt so I came up with the image above. (picture on the front of the shirt, words on the back) I've had the picture for years but never got around to making the T-shirt. Who knows maybe someday I'll submit it to a website like snorgtees.com.

This week's Illustration Friday topic is "Late", which is ironic since I was late submitting for last week's topic "String". Above is a drawing of a string of insults. If I have time this week I will add another drawing for "Late".

IF: Forgotten

I had this idea for a cartoon almost as soon as I heard the subject for this week's Illustration Friday was "Forgotten". However, I didn't find enough time to get the idea beyond more than the rough draft stage. I figured it would be better to post this preliminary sketch than to miss another IF topic completely. I will update this post when I get time to clean up the drawing.
